PM Dahal’s new job for clarifying about agreements with India
Kathmandu, 5 January: Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal has a new task since signing some controversial agreements between Nepal and India on Thursday, 4 January.
India has agreed to import ten thousand MW of electricity in the coming ten years. PM Dahal believes that this is a historical achievement and a milestone in relations between Nepal and India.
India is the monopolist importer of Nepal’s electricity. Nepal should sell its electricity at the price set by India, not the price claimed by Nepal. How much profit did Nepal earn from exports of electricity to India until now, neither the government nor the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has informed. Financial observers say that Nepal is facing a loss from exports of electricity to India.
If Nepal increases electricity production and India says no to importing it from Nepal, where does Nepal consume it, the question remains unanswered.
On the above background, Nepal should not be happy with the electricity deal with India.
Better yet, Nepal should develop an electricity consumption market within the country to avoid possible Indian bargaining in the days to come.
Accordingly, another controversial agreement that the Nepali nationals did not like is allowing the Indian Embassy to set a new ceiling of 20 crore rupees without informing the Nepal government.
Strong criticisms are made against the decision of the present government to allow India to spend funds directly.
PM Dahal, however, believes that this is a gain for Nepal. His new task is to defend the government's decision.
Why does India come to spend billions of rupees on different projects in Nepal when the poverty rate in India is very high? Understandably, India has hidden interests.
Be that as it may, this is “India’s comfortable” government, and it is not odd that the government is serving Indian interests.
