Kathmandu, 25 November: Nepal Electricity Authority has exported electricity worth 12.5 billion rupees to India in the first four months of the current fiscal year 2080-081.  Electricity exports are 4.86 billion 44 lakh rupees more than in the same period last year 2079/080. In the first four months of last year, 983.8 million units of electricity were exported and earned 7 billion, 848 million rupees. The authority had started selling the electricity saved in the rainy season in the country on the Indian market.  Kulman Ghising, executive director of the authority, said that 7 billion 848 million Indian rupees were earned from electricity exports during 4 months, which contributed to the foreign exchange reserves of the country as well as the trade deficit between Nepal and India. The Authority has been exporting to India the electricity saved during the rainy season after consumption within the country. The authority is selling about 110 MW of electricity to Indian company NTPC Electricity Trading Corporation through competition in IX's day-ahead market and under a mid-term power agreement. NVN sells electricity in the state of Haryana. The Authority has not disclosed how much profit Nepal gains from the export of electricity. Nepali hydropower experts say that Nepal is exporting electricity to India below the production price. They opine that the government should expand the consumption of electricity at home instead of exporting it at a low price to India.  People’s News Monitoring Service
