27 Pous being observed as national unity day
Kathmandu, 30 December: After 16 years the government has decided to observe 27 Pous (11 January 2023) as the national unity day.
27 Pous is the birth anniversary of King Prithivi Narayan Shah the Great, who founded present Nepal by unifying different small states.
The cabinet of ministers led by the then prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala in 2006, had scrapped the national day.
In response to the demands put forward by Rastriya Prajatantra Party, the government led by Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda has decided to suspend the Koirala-led government’s decision, reports Deshsanchar Online portal.
PM Prachanda had invited RPP to join the government, whereas, RPP had put forward some conditions earlier to joining the government.
Observing 27 Pous as the national unity day is among the conditions put forward by RPP.
Krishna Prasad Shitaula, then home minister, had initiated the move for suspending 27 Pous as the national holiday.
