By Shanker Man Singh  When Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda took the oath of office, he was widely praised for wearing Daura-Suruwal. With the support of 169 MPs from seven parties and 3 independents, Prachanda, who was recently elected as Prime Minister, took the oath of office and secrecy. When the section officer in government services started working, they used to wear it for the first time and sometimes when they wear it during “urdi”. There is a strong opinion that the pioneering leap of dressing up in the national dress for the first time will be seen in the government's actions as well. In the past, it was sponsored as a dress worn by kings and maharajas. Some have praised Prachanda wearing Daura-Saruwal on social media. We should respect, protect and promote all Nepalese ethnic costumes. However, the use of national costumes in official ceremonies maintains dignity. There is no need to feel inferior when wearing Daura-Suruval. Some have even called it, 'Photo of the year 2022', 'There was no reason to feel inferior when wearing such a well-fitting Nepalese dress Daura-Suruwal. ''Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda always wore a tie-suit and Bhadgaon cap when participating in public events. It is to be remembered that Prachanda and Dr Baburam Bhattarai were wearing grey colored shorts and pants immediately after they were made public after ten years of the "people’s war". In a cursory review of history, Prachanda wore a Bhadgaon cap along with a tie-suit when he became prime minister for the first time in 2065. He continued to wear this dress at formal events. He argued that he often wears a tie-suit and a cap made of cotton to reconcile nationalism and internationalism. "Communists are internationalists", Prachanda told BBC Nepali Service two years ago, "During Mao's era, Chinese Communist Party leaders and workers used to wear coats, now they have been changed into suits and ties." This time, he chose Daura Suruwal. Wearing a grey coat over a white sash, he arrived at the President's Office, Sheetal Niwas, and was seen repeatedly changing his sash during the swearing-in ceremony. The interior of Daura Surwal is a dress worn in some areas of Nepal and India like Sikkim, Darjeeling etc. It was the national dress of Nepal till 2068 BS. In 2068, the Baburam Bhattarai-led government decided to remove Daura-Suruwal-Topi, and Gunyucholi as they were not timely. This dress is mostly used in hilly areas. Along with Daura-Suruwal, it is customary to wear a Dhaka cap or Bhadgaon cap on the coat and head. In the Rigveda, which is believed to have been written 15,000 to 20,000 years ago, and the subsequent Atharvaveda, the word posakabodhaka drapery appears, which commentators say was a cloak (like a cloak). A seizure from the draper is understood. Siddhinarsingh Malla is seen in a drawing circa 1680 wearing a tunic. This dress is also seen in countless other Malla period sculptures. Daura is long-sleeved and has two pleats on the chest at the front and can be tied on both sides from the hips to the knees. It is twisted by tying the right and left buttons, tying four places above the bottom of the right and left, doubling or stitching and using a septic on the inner side of the back. Its other names are Labeda and Myalpos. Men of all castes living in the mountains wear Daura. Daura extends from the neck to the knees. It consists of eight tunas. They are tied in four places. A Suruwal, cap and east coat are worn with Daura. It is easy to recognize a person who wears such a thing as a Nepali. Myalpos, Labeda and Daura are synonymous. However, they are not completely synonymous. It is not enough that Myalpos is a courtly, Labeda Kanthprachal and Daura Pahari address. The treasurer of Sahi Labeda Mukundasen, still preserves in his Palpa a dress that comes below the knee, and is also very puffy. The seeds of mehel (Pyrus pashia) give an indelible brown color. Dark-colored clothes that did not fade were popular only among the upper classes because royal colors were expensive. If it was worn by the upper class, then it would have been sewn with labor and the hem would have been stitched. That's why it is considered that the clothes (Labeda/Daura) painted with Mehal colors and of the right size are called Mayalpos. Later, in India, the unopened barley color was found everywhere and this color became very popular among the Nepalese people. In the description of Francis Hamilton in 1803, it is mentioned that 'Raddis Cotton Wool' is in vogue everywhere in Nepal. Around the same time, Myalpos and Daura became synonyms. Having said that, Myalpos is in a rough sense custom made, the hard part being the fit and which looks different than the free size course. Kochhya is also the name of Daura in Jumla. In Newari, 'vot lan' means vot clothes. It is believed that the older ones will have kharapa and the younger ones will not. In Magar and Gurung, Daura is synonymous with Bhoto. In Thakali it is known as Daura Angi. Daurabodhak Lachum of Sampang and Loki Langsupma of Yakkha try to reconcile. Surwal  The Suruwal is tied around the waist with an “injar”. It is worn from the waist down to the ankles. Suruwal is not a translation or adaptation of Salwar. According to him, Suruwal is a formative, like Surahi and tunnel. The Maoists of the armed insurgency associated Daura Suruwal with "centralized nationalism". Even after entering into peaceful politics, the Maoist leaders did not put up a Daura-Surwal saying that the king-maharaja had imposed a policy of one language and one disguise on the caste and culture of Nepal's diverse society. Even those who became ministers from Maoist following the top leaders did not start the tour. But the Maoist leaders who opposed it in the past are gradually getting attracted to Daura Surwal. Maoist militant commander Nandkishore Pun Pasang, who became the vice president in 2072, wore a Daura-Suruwal during the swearing-in ceremony. Even after that, he used to wear it at public events. Top Bahadur Rayamajhi is among the then Maoist leaders who wore Daura Surwal when he was a minister. When he was a minister in the government led by Jhalnath Khanal in 2067, he wore a Daura Surwal. Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who became the Speaker of the Federal Parliament in 2074, also wore Daura Surwal. Dr Baburam Bhattarai started his tour when he reached Karnali while travelling east-west through Madhyapahari folk route. In 2075, he published a picture of wearing Daura Surwal, saying it was a 'disguise according to the country'. Maoist leader Agni Prasad Sapkota, who became the Speaker on 12 Jan 2076 after Mahara was relieved of his post, also started a Daura Surwal. Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal, who came from the Maoist armed rebellion, also wore Daura Surwal. Maoist senior vice president Narayankaji Shrestha, Ram Karki and other leaders also wore Daura Surwal while taking the oath of the minister. Prachanda, the 'supreme' of their armed rebellion, had not yet worn Daura Suruwal. He had remarked, "I didn't wear Daura Suruwal because I was focused on one dress and thought about what would happen to people with other dresses, cultures and traditions". Now, with the support of CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, the Prime Minister has chosen Daura Suruwal. The Maoist leaders have interpreted this as trying to reflect the circumstances in which they became the prime minister. PR Dahal, who did not wear Daura Suruwal in public functions before, has also given a novelty in the use of dress this time. Not only the Prime Minister, but the Deputy Prime Minister also wore the same dress while taking the oath of office and secrecy. During the festive season, Dasain, Tihar, marriage ceremonies and other ceremonies, there is more interest and business, and the increasing attachment of leaders towards Daura Surwal should be taken positively. There are many opinions that all Nepalis should take a meaningful initiative for the promotion of national dress. It is easy to wear and can be used in any season, Daura Suruwal has its own importance and speciality.
