Maoist Center supremo Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda has become the new prime minister of the country with the support of UML, an arch-rival of Prachanda.
Prachanda quit the existing five-party ruling alliance and developed a new alliance with UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli and other small parties having different ideologies on 25 December.
Break-up of the old alliance:
An unnatural alliance between the democratic parties and the left parties was developed to capture power. The alliance continued during the 20 November elections also. However, when the issue of power-sharing was raised among the partners, a dispute among the partners was witnessed. Maoist Center chair Pushpakamal Dahal, although being the third largest party, wanted to become the prime minister for the third time and in the meantime, Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba also wanted to continue as the prime minister on the ground that NC appeared as the largest party from the 20 November elections.
Both Deuba and Dahal didn’t wish to compromise on their stance, and finally, UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli took the benefit of the dispute by offering the PM’s post to Prachanda for the first half tenure of parliament i.e. for two and a half years and keeping the president and speaker’s posts for the party. They also agreed to form coalition governments in seven provinces.
Unethical alliance:
The present alliance among those political parties having different political agendas and philosophies has been developed just for the “bhagbanda” politics. They include those advocating for federalism, secularism, and republicanism to those who campaign for a Hindu kingdom and scrapping federalism. Those who had once lauded a separate Madhesh nation have also been included in the alliance for power sharing.
The newly emerged Rastriya Swatantra Party, which is against corruption and also said to be funded by Western Christian groups is also included in the alliance.
In conclusion, they all have developed a syndicate just to share power, no more than this.
Indeed, the present political developments are a continuation of dirty games and sharing the prime minister’s post turn by turn by Prachanda and Oli and sharing key posts by the syndicate partners.
