Kathmandu, 12 December: The coalition government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has decided to grant amnesty to criminals serving jail term to form a new government as the current coalition falls short of a few seats in the parliament to prove simple majority.
A Cabinet meeting on Sunday decided to issue an ordinance to amend the criminal code clearing legal hurdles to grant amnesty to anyone convicted of crimes. In order to help withdrawal of cases against leaders and cadres of Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) leader Resham Chaudhary and others including Janamat Party led by CK Raut and Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN.
Nepali Congress has approached the NUP, led by Ranjita Shrestha, wife of Chaudhary, for the party’s support. It has three lawmakers. Release of Chaudhary is the main precondition of the party for extending its support to the ruling coalition.
