Kathmandu, 13 November: The major political parties who that have intensified campaigning by forming alliances are trying to attract voters by telling them that they are getting more seats than previous election. The coalition partners, comprising Nepali Congress, CPN–Maoist Center, CPN–US, Democratic Socialist Party and Rashtriya Jan Morcha have been claiming that the alliance will get a two-thirds majority.
The UML, which has aligned with Janata Samajwadi Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), RPP Nepal, Parivar Dal led by Eknath Dhakal and People's Progressive Party led by Hridayesh Tripathi, too has been claiming to have a single majority. However, the internal projections of the parties are lower than what is publicly claimed.
The ruling coalition is aiming to win as many seats as possible by dropping the common votes of all the affiliated parties. UML has calculated that not all votes will be transferred within the ruling coalition and it will benefit from it.
The UML is doing door-to-door campaign with the slogan ' Oli government after November 20'. The UML, which got 34 percent votes in the last local elections, has claimed to increase its votes by 6 percent in the upcoming elections. It estimates that if this increases, it will get a majority. "We bring the majority. We are confident that the insufficient 6 percent vote will be enough for that," says UML Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Rimal.
Nepali Congress leader and analyst Meinendra Rijal says that if the votes are transferred as expected, the ruling coalition will get 136 seats directly. He said that if the vote 'transfer' is not effective, the alliance may fall to 88 seats. If the votes of the alliance are transferred to each other, there is a basis that only Nepali Congress can win 71 seats. But if the transfer does not happen, it may also fall to 58 seats, he said.
In the First Past the Post electoral system for the House of Representatives, Nepali Congress is likely to have 60-70 seats, CPN-UML 40-45 seats, CPN (MC) 35 and CPN (US) 12-15 seats. 'Nationalism' the main election issue of the UML and it has filed candidature in 141 constituencies out of 165 in the House of Representatives while MC has fielded candidates in 46 constituencies.
