Kathmandu, 4 September: During the third day’s statement recording today, the suspended Chief Justice Cholendrashamsher JB Rana admitted that it was a mistake to reduce the prison sentence of the then DIG of the Armed Police Ranjan Koirala.

“Ranjan Koirala had been found guilty. He had been imprisoned for life. Judges have the right to exercise discretion. The then civil law has given that right. This is a family issue. His teenager sons were also present in the court. To rear his teenager sons his life  imprisonment was reduced. There was a mistake in using discretion,” Rana said.

Koirala, some ten years ago murdered his wife at their Budhanilkanth based house in Kathmandu and burned her body next day in Makwanpur district. There was a widespread criticism for reducing his jail term by justice Rana.
