The Election Commission is now busy preparing for the November 20 elections to the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assemblies. The EC that recently concluded the tasks of party registration, is now seeking a budget and other logistics including the security personnel to hold the polls peacefully.
According to the EC, altogether 62 political parties are registered with the EC for the election purpose.
However, the EC will not use electronic voting machines in the elections as the government has been reluctant to manage the EVMs. As a result, the voters will be casting votes on ballot papers and the vote counting will take a longer time.
Likewise, the EC has sought Rs. 10 billion to hold the polls.
In a series of meetings with journalists and the government, Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya and other commissioners have been stating that they will need at least Rs. 10 billion to hold the polls in a single phase.
In a bid the cut expenses of the candidates, the EC has already issued a notice that the parties and candidates will be given only a fortnight for canvassing.
