Kathmandu, 14 August: To control illegal imports of mobile phone sets from foreign countries, the Nepal Telecommunication Authority has decided to introduce the Mobile Device Management system (MDMS) beginning on 15 September next month.
It was informed at a workshop organized jointly by NTA and Nepal Mobile Phone Importers’ Association in Kathmandu last week.
Dipak Malhotra, chairman of the Mobile Importers’ Association, expressed sorrow for listing the mobile sets as a luxury item and restricting their import. He said mobile has become an essential commodity for every citizen and listing it as a luxury item is unfortunate.
The purpose of the government was to save the foreign currency reserve by curtailing the import of the mobile sets but the market is flooded with illegally imported mobile sets, from which, the government is losing customs revenue. Meanwhile, those business organizations in mobile trading have been facing a big loss, Malhotra said.
NTA’s director Surendra Hada, informed about the MDMS system and Rewatiraman Pant informed about the MDMS bylaws 2075 on the occasion.
Chief guest and secretary Baikuntha Aryal informed that to curb the illegal import of mobile sets, the MDMS system is important.
NTA chairman Purusottam Khanal informed that the NTA is planning to introduce the MDMS system from 15 September.
