The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) at an “interaction programmer” on May 26 in Kathmandu competently defended and explained the salient features of the 144-MW Kali Gandaki “A” project.
It was chaired by Dr Rameshanand Vaidya, member, National Planning Commission. In his remarks, Vaidya stated that the selection of hydroelectric projects in the country should be geared to keeping costs at a minimum and ensuring that surplus energy could be made accessible to the Indian market.
The function was the third programme of its kind organized by the NEA with reference to that particular project. As was evident during the programme; it seemed to be heavily influenced by the ruckus created by environmental and other groups in the past over the now aborted Arun-3 hydroelectric project in the Arun Valley in eastern Nepal.
