Kathmandu, 26 July: Kulman Ghising, Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), has said that the geopolitical challenge for Nepal's hydro-power development has become apparent. He also stated India's reluctance to buy electricity generated from Nepal's hydro-power projects with Chinese investors and contractors.
Ghising, while addressing an interaction on "Nepal's Energy Diplomacy: Problems and Prospects of Cooperation with India, Bangladesh and China" held by Association of Former Career Ambassadors of Nepal (AFCAN) on Monday, mentioned about the hydro-power directive introduced by India a few years ago, which categorically stated that 50 percent Indian investment should be made for the purchase of electricity produced in neighboring countries.
"Now a new issue has surfaced that India is reluctant to supply explosives to Nepal's hydro-power projects, where Chinese investors and contractors are involved. In recent days, such geopolitical interests have affected hydro-power development. The electricity related regulations and procedures introduced by India are dynamic. However, India has a policy of not taking the electricity generated by projects with Chinese investment," Ghising said.
Former Water Resources Minister and Water Resources Expert Deepak Gyawali opined that India is regulating Nepal's water because it considers it as a strategic resource." This is the product of narrow mindedness of India," he asserted.
Former Water Resources Secretary and Water Resources Expert Suryanath Upadhyay said that Nepal has always suffered due to India's ' hegemonic and big brotherly' attitude.
