Kathmandu, 22 July: The Citizenship Bill is being ratified today. The meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) scheduled for this afternoon is set to pass the bill through 'fast track'. According to today's agenda of the HoR, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba will propose to send the Nepal Special Service Bill, 2076 to the relevant committee for discussion. On behalf of the Prime Minister, Home Minister Balkrishna Khan will submit the bill in the House. The Parliament Secretariat has informed that the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill, 2079 will be presented in the House for discussion. General Secretary of the Federal Parliament, Bharatraj Gautam, has said that there is also an agenda to submit the amendments to the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill, 2079 for decision. The opposition party CPN-UML has said that it will oppose it. It is in favour of granting naturalized citizenship only after seven years. The government withdrew the bill that was finalized after 22 months by the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee and registered a new bill. In the bill that was finalized earlier by the committee, the proposal that a foreign woman marrying a Nepali man should wait seven years after marriage was passed by the majority last week.
