Former King Gyanendra expresses sorrow over removal of late King Birendra’s statue in Nepalgunj
Kathmandu, 2 June: Former King Gyanendra has expressed sorrow over the removal of the newly placed statute of the late King Birendra by the local administration in Nepalgunj today.
The statue of the late King Birendra placed by patriotic people in Nepalgunj was removed by the local administration inviting confrontation. The patriotic people in Nepalgunj had placed a new statute at the Birendra Chowk after the previous statue was demolished by the agitators in the 2006 April unrest.
Immediately after the placement of the new statue today, the Police removed it irritating the pro-monarchy patriotic people there. The locals had protested against the Nepal Police act.
The former King has opposed the intervention of the Police while restoration of the new statue of the late King. The former King has denounced the actions of the local administration saying that history cannot be omitted.
“We are shocked from the obstacle while spontaneous patriotic and democratic people were reestablishing the statue of the late King Birendra at the Birendra Chowk in Nepalgunj”, the former King has stated.
The former King has remarked that it would not be appropriate for rejecting a person who has made a special contribution to the country on the basis of opinion. Shah has warned that history will not be erased.
After the Police intervention, the situation in Nepalgunj came under tense and the Police had to open fire to disperse the demonstrators.
