By P.R. Pradhan When bad guys dominate politics, then the nation and the people will suffer. The supreme leaders of the five parties in the alliance government are spending valuable time in worthless meetings. Almost every day the leaders of five parties are sitting for developing an electoral alliance and power-sharing mechanism. After ensuring common candidature for their daughters, wives and relatives, now, they are fighting against each other for a bigger size of the cake. Sunday and Monday were set for filing candidature but the ruling alliance was unable to finalize the names of the common candidates until the last hours. Therefore, they had decided to postpone it till Monday (25 April). There should be many other important businesses for the government, for the executive chef of the government and the supreme leaders of the parties in the alliance government. However, we have not been informed about their business except quarrelling about the larger size of the cake. The present electoral alliance doesn’t have any specific agenda except from describing the need for the alliance for safeguarding the present loktantra popularly known as “loot-tantra” (rampant loot) and to fail the ‘regressive elements’ undemocratic move. It is clear that the supreme leaders of the five-party alliance have developed such a syndicate just to enjoy the power and organize rampant loot on the nation’s treasury by sidelining UML. However, the ground reality is different. There is a strong dissatisfaction among the grassroots level workers in the Nepali Congress. They are criticizing the incapable leadership of the party president and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. Along with the end of the local elections, the Nepali Congress may face a heavy loss in the party organization as a large section of the NC cadres are likely to quit the party. Meanwhile, a section of the NC intellectuals is campaigning for not casting vote for the alliance candidates. Dr Sundarmani Dixit has asked the voters for boycotting the alliance candidates. Noted NC leader Laxuman Ghimire said that the NC voters will not vote in other election symbols except the “tree” election symbol of the NC. Dr Sekhar Koirala, who is against the alliance with the communist parties, has expressed utter dissatisfaction saying that it is unfortunate for the NC cadres to cast their votes in another party’s election symbol. A large number of NC activists have expressed their dissatisfaction in the social networking outlets against the party leadership for compelling them to cast votes in another election symbol. Failure of alliance: Despite the weeks-long efforts of the supreme leaders of the five parties, at the local level in different districts, the parties have not been able to develop a healthy alliance. Therefore, they have forged a different alliance with different strategies. Odd to note, in RPP chairman Rajendra Lingden’s electoral constituency in Jhapa, UML and NC, arch-rival in the center, have developed an alliance against the RPP candidates. Although party leaderships who have lost popularity, have forged an alliance, there is a high possibility for a negative election result, which may also affect electoral alliance efforts in the provincial and federal elections later this year.
