Last week, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba inaugurated two Indian TV channels to be aired via satellite from Kathmandu. Former prime ministers Pushpakamal Dahal and Madhav Nepal were also present at the inauguration ceremony. They lauded the contribution of Yoga Guru Ramdev, an Indian national. Ramdev is the main owner of the multinational company Patanjali.
Ramdev is planning to invest in Nepal for flourishing his business. Deuba has assured Ramdev for providing necessary land to him by the government. If Patanjali will come with a huge investment, Nepal's local investors are going to be replaced. Leaders are less bothered about the nation's interests.
Moreover, the Prime Minister is found inaugurated the TV channels which have not been registered in Nepal. Also, Nepal's law prohibits foreign investment in media.
This is a reflection that to what extent our political leaders can exhibit their slavery mentality!
Exposing each other!
The Bar Association, an umbrella organization of the lawyers, is in agitation demanding the resignation of the Supreme Court chief justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana. They are staging sit-in programmes daily at the government declared restricted zone. The government is helpless that it has not been able to stop the lawyers from violating the restricted zone. The lawyers believe they are above the law!
This time, the Bar Association and the SC judges have tried to establish odd evidence. Some judges said that they were not taking part at the constitutional bench represented by junior judges. The lawyers dictated to the SC chief justice that judges objectionable for them should be removed from the constitutional bench. CJ Rana, responding to the judges and also the lawyers, re-constituted the constitutional bench.
Today, what is happening in the SC is just the beginning. In the days to come, the lawyers will dictate the judges for the verdict. The lawyers are saying that to clean the court, they are demanding the resignation of Rana but one doesn’t believe that other judges are clean and lawyers too are clean.
The legal process to terminate the CJ is to file an impeachment case against him by the political parties in the parliament. Why the political parties are delaying filing an impeachment case against Rana, is surprising!
The fact is that the present constitution is defective and if the trend of assigning judges based on their political belief and based on their commitment for paying commission in advance to the political parties against the appointment to the post of the SC judge, the court cannot be cleaned.
Shambhu Thapa?
Chief Justice Cholendra S. Rana is a controversial judge and many of his verdicts have become controversial. Recently, the Bar Association has made public a verdict related to a public property being captured by a person in Birgunj. By neglecting all the evidence, Rana gave the verdict for transferring the public property under an individual’s ownership. This is a serious and objectionable verdict. But senior advocate Shambhu Thapa had pleaded in favour of transferring the public property into private ownership. Can the lawyers violate social norms and ethics?
The compulsion of using Indian land
King Mahendra took a historical initiative to construct Mechi-Mahakali Highway. Otherwise, Nepalis were compelled to travel to India to go to another place within the country. Today, we can travel to Mahakali from Mechi without using the Indian land. We commend the vision of King Mahendra.
Still, people in Darchula district are unable to travel to another village in the district via our land and they cross the Mahakali River and reach Dharchula on the Indian side to reach another village from the district headquarters.
The population census team tried to go to the Nepali village by using the Indian territory but the Indian authorities didn’t give permission. Therefore, the team left for the village via Nepal’s remote trekking route.
What we believe that why the Nepal government neglected the construction of a road to the village in Darchula district linking the district headquarters! Such are the issues considered to be strategically important. The Indian authorities by denying permission to travel the census team from the Indian route have done an appreciable job. They have tried to awake the Nepal government for the construction of a road via Nepali’s territory!
Still, people in the Nepal-India border area have relied on the supplies from the Indian side for their day-to-day requirements. The Nepal government should develop the mechanism of supplying daily consumable goods and establish other facilities for the people residing in the bordering areas.
