The price hike in petroleum products including cooking gas has made the life of poor people more miserable.
When many people have lost their source of income to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has been increasing the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas every week.
When the fuel price goes up, everything becomes expensive. Even the airfare skyrocketed citing the hike in the price of aviation fuel.
With the rise in fuel, transportation fare also goes up and the prices of every item. For example, the prices of vegetables including potatoes and tomatoes has been increasing. Although it is the season of cauliflower, its price has been unexpectedly high.
Moreover, the increase of the price of cooking gas by Rs. 75 per cylinder has affected the city dwellers.
Although the student organisations took to the streets and the Biplav-led Communist Party called a general strike against the price rise, the government did not withdraw its decision. Instead, the student organisations and the Biplav-led party have been keeping mum over the price hike. No political party raised their voice against the price hike.
As a result, the livelihood of low-income people has become difficult.
