Kathmandu, 18 November: As the 14th General Convention of the Nepali Congress is approaching, there is a growing possibility of a balance of power among influential leaders. As there are many aspirants for the president’s post, there is no single leader who can dominate the entire party. In the past, when Girija Prasad Koirala was the sole influence, no one could challenge him in the presidency. At present, no single leader is having such an influence in Congress. Therefore, it is not possible to win the presidency without sharing power with other influential leaders. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is also the president of the Nepali Congress, is personally the strongest. However, he does not appear to have a single majority. Senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary Dr. Sashank Koirala, former general secretary Prakash Man Singh and Krishna Prasad Sitaula are trying to develop an alliance among them to challenge Deuba. Meanwhile, Deuba is trying to bring Singh or Shitaula into his camp.  Koirala, on the other hand, is saying that there should be a common candidate from Deuba’s rival camp to defeat Deuba. He has remarked that Poudel or Singh cannot defeat Deuba.  Singh has publicly stated that the party cannot be run by Deuba and Poudel. He has also questioned Koirala's ability. He is not likely to withdraw his candidature.  Shitaula may support Deuba. Accordingly, at the last hours, Shashank may support Sekhar. Sujata Koirala is angry with both Sekhar and Shashank.  Sitaula, on the other hand, is likely to support Deuba. Sashank Koirala is also likely to support Shekhar Koirala in the final stage. However, there is no unity within the Koirala family. Sujata Koirala is irritated with both Sashank and Shekhar. Deuba has wished to get support from Bijaya Gachhadar but Gachhadar has not given words to Deuba. Bimalendra Nidhi, Deuba’s supporter in the past, has also announced his candidature. He may not support Deuba.  Now, the possibility of an alliance between Prakash Man Singh, Sashank Koirala and Vimalendra Nidhi has become weak. However, due to political developments, there is a possibility of unity between the three through power-sharing. Deuba is also trying to develop an alliance with Gachhedar and Nidhi. There is also a possibility of moving forward from power-sharing between Deuba and Poudel. These two have been getting closer lately. There is also a possibility that Singh joining the Deuba camp at the last moment. Both were together in the past. With Singh, Deuba's chances of winning the presidency are strong. After Deuba, Singh is the strongest in terms of single grip. Poudel has also tried to develop a common camp of anti-Deuba groups by supporting one candidate from the Koirala family. But, it is not easy. Influential leaders Poudel, Koirala and Singh must unite to strengthen the anti-Deuba group. This possibility is weak but not impossible. People's News Monitoring Service
