By Our Reporter CPN UML has decided to hold its 10th national convention in Chitwan from 26 to 28 November. The UML is going to elect a new team in the central committee. UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli is almost sure to be elected for the next tenure as there is no other personality to defeat him. However, vice-chairman Bhim Rawal has announced to contest to the post of chair challenging Oli in the upcoming national convention. It is believed that the entire Oli team is going to be victorious in the party election. Meanwhile, it has become difficult to chair Oli to manage the senior vice chairman as there has been seen more leaders anxious to get the position. Ishwor Pokhrel and Rambahadur Thapa are eying on the senior vice chairman's post. The UML leadership is trying to elect a new team through a consensus, according to Ishwor Pokhrel, general secretary. However, more leaders are interested in executive positions in the central level party organisation. Accordingly, the Maoist Center is holding its national conclave in Kathmandu from 26 to 28 December. The national conclave is going to give the mandate to Prachanda to lead the party for the next term as well. There is no other leader to challenge Prachanda’s leadership in the party. Prachanda is in the leadership position for decades. Nepali Congress is preparing for its 14th national convention from 10 to 12 December this year. This is the sixth time of postponement of the national convention dates. NC is under pressure to hold its national convention at any cost as the political parties have to submit a report of holding a national convention within five years. The NC has already completed the five years’ term and now, NC is in compulsion for holding its national convention at any cost. Earlier, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba was reluctant in holding the national convention, however, now, when he saw a division in his rival camp, he has been encouraged to hold the national convention at the lately scheduled dates.  Of late, Deuba has instructed to hold the ward level assembly in the disputed districts. After holding the ward level assembly, it will pave the way for district and province level conventions of the party. Deuba’s rival camp has not been able to name the common candidate. Prakashman Singh has announced his candidature to the post of party president. He has disassociated with the Ramchandra Poudel camp and announced to contest the election along with his panel. Still, in the Poudel camp, Poudel himself, Shanka Koirala, Sekhar Koirala, Krishna Shitaula are keen to contest for party president's post. Deuba is keen to be reelected to the post of president. However, Bimalendra Nidhi, Deuba’s longtime aide, has also announced to challenge Deuba. Similarly, Deuba’s another aide Gopalman Shrestha has also claimed to contest the election. Accordingly, RPP has scheduled to hold its unity national convention in Kathmandu from 27 to 29 November. RPP is going to elect new leadership. Kamal Thapa, one among the three chairmen of the RPP is in a race to capture the party chairman’s position. Nevertheless, Pashupati Shumsher Rana is the decisive factor in the party. The second-generation leaders have wished to challenge Thapa. Rajendra Lingden, the only MP from RPP and Dhawal Shumsher Rana, mayor, Nepalgunj Sub Metropolis have developed a front demanding handover of the leadership to the second generation leaders in the party. High-level mechanism and the future of the alliance government The five parties in the alliance government have formed a high-level mechanism to give instruction/guidance to the government. This idea was floated by Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda to bring into control Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and other ministers. Earlier, Deuba had opposed the formation of such an unconstitutional mechanism. However, lately, Deuba agreed to constitute such a mechanism. Deuba said that the mechanism is constituted to give common candidates in the upcoming National Assembly election. NCP Unified Socialist Party chair Madhav Nepal believes that the mechanism will continue until the next general elections. To note, Unified Socialist Party and Maoist Center have lost the vote base and they may see a serious defeat in the upcoming elections if they contest elections separately. Therefore, Nepal and Prachanda are putting pressure on the NC to forge an election alliance to defeat UML led by K.P. Sharma Oli. Of late, due to the split in the communist parties and also the split of the Tarai based parties, NC has become the strong party as NC’s vote bank is as-it-is. Therefore, leaders in Deuba’s rival camp are opposing the idea of contesting elections by developing a joint front. They are saying that NC alone can emerge as the largest party. According to a secret survey conducted by the UML, the party is going to occupy the position of the second-largest party after the NC. But if the five parties in the alliance government will forge an election alliance, UML can be cornered. However, if developed an election front between the NC and the communist parties, the NC will be the main loser as it will lose the chance for becoming the largest party.
