Kathmandu, 1 November: Tihar festival, the second big festival in Nepal after the Dasain festival, is going to start from Tuesday. The Aryuvedic medicine practitioners observe Tuesday as the Dhanwantari anniversary, the inventor of Aryuvedic treatment. Accordingly, commoners observe the first day of the Tihar festival as Dhan-Trayodashi. They purchase gold and silver ornaments, new pots, water jars etc. on the day. Wednesday is being observed as the crow festival and also the dog festival by worshipping crows and dogs. Thursday is the Mahalaxmi Pooja, the day for worshipping the Goddess of wealth and also worshipping cows as the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi. Accordingly, Friday is the Gobardhan Pooja, the day for worshipping the ox. The same day, the Newar community observes the new year. This year the Newar community is observing New Year 1142. The day is also known as Mha Pooja (self-pooja). Saturday is the final day of the Tihar festival. The festival ends along with sisters worshipping brothers by wishing long-life, good health, prosperity and happiness. Tihar is known as the festival of colour.
