Chief Justice episode: Opposition eager to file impeachment, the ruling party divided
Kathmandu, 30 October: Various organizations, including the Nepal Bar Association, have called for the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana. But he is not ready to resign easily. He has indicated that he will not resign but is preparing to face impeachment.
After the appointment of non-MP Hamal as a minister, the government was sharply criticized at the grassroots level along with the ruling coalition. Unable to contain the criticism, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had demanded Minister Hamal’s resignation.
After former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli failed to get a vote of confidence, the Supreme Court had issued an order to make the Nepali Congress president Deuba the prime minister.
Though the issue of asking for Cholendra's resignation has been raised outside, the ruling party has remained silent on the issue. There are two sides in the ruling party on the issue of filing impeachment or not to the CJ.
UML chair and former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli has demanded the resignation of Rana and four other judges in the constitutional bench.
