The national convention of the Nepali Congress which has already been deferred four times is almost sure to be postponed again after the party managed to hold the district level convention only in 13 of the 21 Himalayan districts before Dashain. Now they will be held only after the Chhath festival.

By now the party has held the ward and municipal level conventions only in 51 districts.

An NC Central Election Committee member said last week that the central level general convention of the party could be rescheduled for mid-January 2022.

In its first calendar, the NC had scheduled its central general convention for September 1-4.

The general convention dates are being deferred because of the disputes over the active membership in some districts, and the inability to hold the ward, municipal district level general convention in various districts on the pre-scheduled dates.

Now the NC Central Election Committee has rescheduled to hold the party’s district-level convention in the mountainous districts after the Chhath festival. Earlier, it had decided to hold the district general convention in 21 mountainous districts before Dashain. However, the party managed to hold the convention in only 13 districts.

The party is yet to hold its ward level general convention in 13 districts because of the active membership row.

Moreover, the party has not yet resolved the active membership row in Rasuwa and Rautahat whereas ward level convention has not been held in 13 districts.

When the convention of NC has become uncertain, Prime Minister and Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba on Tuesday instructed the party Central Election Committee to prepare the calendar of the party’s 14th general convention to conclude it by mid-December.

During a meeting with the former and present office-bearers of the party and the officials of the Election Committee held at NC Parliamentary Party Office at Singha Durber, president Deuba gave the instruction.

Although the instruction cleared all confusion regarding the fate of the 14th general convention of the party and senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel welcomed the instruction, one cannot say the deadline will be met.

Earlier, the party had decided to hold its central general convention on November 26-29.

Senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel and leaders like Prakashman Singh and Dr Shekhar Koirala have been exerting pressure on the leadership to hold the convention on the scheduled dates fearing whether the party president won’t hold the convention unless he becomes sure of winning the party presidential post.

UML holds municipal-level convention

The CPN-UML held its municipal-level convention under its 10th general convention in 600 local levels on Tuesday.

The main opposition has been preparing for its 10th national general convention after it departed from power and split in the party.

The UML had convened its ward level conventions on Saturday by electing the representatives unanimously.

The UML had issued a circular instructing the party cadres to hold conventions in consensus to the maximum possible and unanimously select leadership.

UML Party office informed that leadership was unanimously selected in more than 6,000 wards across the country.

Patry chairman KP Sharma Oli, like the ward level convention, inaugurated the municipal convention virtually on Tuesday.

According to Sher Bahadur Tamang, secretary of the party office, the ward and municipal-level conventions of the disaster affected region would be held by mid-November.

The 10th general convention of the CPN-UML will be held in Chitwan from November 26-28.

The party has formed a 21-member general convention main management committee under the coordination of party former Maoist leader Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’.
