Kathmandu, 2 September: Taking advantage of Political Party Amendment Act that paved way for split in the CPN-UML and subsequently allowed lawmakers to remain with Khadga Oli or side with Madhav Kumar Nepal, several provincial assembly members have chosen CPN (Unified Socialist). The impact of split has been seen in Province 1 and Bagamati where Chief Ministers Bhim Acharya and Astalaxmi Shakya have lost majority in government.
With the formal defection of 10 Provincial Assembly members to the newly formed CPN (Unified Socialist), CPN-UML’s Chief Minister Acharya’s cabinet has lost its majority. On 26 August, Acharya was chosen as the Parliamentary Party Leader of CPN-UML with commands 51 of 93-member PA members and was sworn in as the second CM of the province on the same day. To retain majority, he requires 47 members, for which CM Acharya is short of six members.
