Political Commentary

Nepali society is power-oriented. Yesterday, there was the Oli raj and today, there is the Prachanda and Madhav Nepal’s raj. The Election Commission was found watching Oli’s gesture to take any decision on other political parties, except the ruling UML party. Oli tried his best to exploit the constitution with the support of President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
However, Oli failed to fix a setting in the court, therefore, Oli had to quit the government.
Since Oli is staying in the opposition and his rivals are in the government today, they are also exploiting the constitutional provisions and misusing power.
On different occasions, Oli had issued different controversial ordinances, however, they were rejected by the Court on the charge of Oli’s attempt for escaping the House of Representatives.
There are around half a dozen writ petitions against Deuba issued ordinances but the court is delaying its hearing on the case. Otherwise, according to the previous Court precedence, the ordinance could have already been rejected. On the moral ground also, Deuba should not have issued such a controversial ordinance which was opposed by himself and other partners in the government today.
Present Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba also didn’t miss to exploit the constitution by issuing an ordinance related to the split of the political parties by escaping the House of Representatives. The ordinance was issued just to split the UML party by favouring the Madhav Nepal faction to form a separate party. So far, the Mahantha Thakur faction in the Janata Samajbadi Party also took benefit of the ordinance by forming the Democratic Socialist Party following a split in JSP.
Normally, the Election Commission would take 45 days to register a new party. This time, within 10 days the Commission registered two new parties. Perhaps under the instruction of the partner political parties in the alliance government.
Speaker Agni Sapkota, on the other hand, postponed the implementation of the recommendation of the UML party for suspending/dismissing 14 MPs on the charge of violation of the party discipline. Earlier, when the Maoist Center had sent a similar type of letter to the Parliament, the speaker had immediately dismissed four Maoist Center’s MP enjoying the ministerial position in the Oli led cabinet. The speaker is found bulling the constitution.
Two faces of Madhav Nepal
Madhav Nepal, chairman of the newly established Nepal Communist Party Unified Socialist, is elected as the leader of the parliamentary party also.
Why Nepal wished to become the leader of the parliamentary party when he had already become the party chairman as he was always advocating for “one person one post” when he was the senior leader in the Nepal Communist Party chaired by K.P. Sharma Oli!
Nepal, even after the split of the Nepal Communist Party and restoration of the UML, didn’t wish to remain within the party demanding Oli’s resignation from one post.
Nepal even denied accepting the ten-point agreement formulated by the second generation leaders aimed at stopping the UML from a split.
Nepal had always blamed Oli for performing dictatorship in the party and he was advocated for rule of law but now he has taken the responsibility for selecting the names of the ministers to be included in the Deuba led cabinet from his party.
Nepal has also demonstrated Oli like behaviour at the party.
