Political Commentary

By P.R. Pradhan Nepali politics is under the grip of a syndicate of a group of people blessed by the Southern and Western power centers. They join the government not to serve the nation and people but to enjoy the power by themselves, and by their dearer and nearer ones. The present alliance government has already completed one month in office but it has not been able to give a complete shape to the cabinet of ministers as political parties are unable to manage their own house and there are many aspirants for becoming the minister. Also, the leaders are engaged in a give and take strategy and sharing the power based on bhagbanda. The Supreme Court reinstated the House of Representatives along with the appointment of Sher Bahadur Deuba as the Prime Minister but both the House and the government have remained without business. After one month in office, the government has been able to unveil the common minimum programme, a whitepaper on the economic scenario of the government and the monitory policy. Besides, the presence of the government has not been seen anywhere. Instead of showing its presence in governance and fighting against the Covid-19 pandemic, the political leaders who are the partner in the government, are engaged in scrapping the previous government’s decisions and appointments. They have given priority to call back the three ambassadors in three important countries – India, China and the USA. When the new ambassadors are going to be appointed in these countries, we don’t know as without consensus among the political parties in the government, the new appointments are impossible. The main conspirer: Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda is seen as the main conspirer. He, after the appointment of Deuba as the Prime Minister, has planned to become the supper prime minister by becoming the coordinator of the high-level mechanism. If such a mechanism is formed, Deuba’s hands will be tightened and decisions will be made from behind the curtain. When Oli, the outgoing prime minister, didn’t listen to Prachanda’s such a plan, the dispute was surfaced in the then Nepal Communist Party. According to Oli, Prachanda was meeting him daily and always putting pressure on him for assigning Prachanda's men to different political appointments. Due to Prachanda created obstacles, the process of dozens of appointments in constitutional organs were delayed for years. After being fade up from Prachanda and other colleagues in the ruling party, Oli decided to move alone and he had to take the decision for a fresh election by dissolving the House of Representatives. What benefit the nation got from the reinstatement of the House?: Again, after the reinstatement of the House of Representatives, the very game of power-sharing has been started and due to the conflict of interests, the House is without business and also the government is dysfunctional. Except for paying salaries and allowances for the MPs, the nation got nothing from the reinstatement of the House. There is a pile of bills impending in the parliament. They had to be endorsed by the House. Many important bills are waiting for the House's endorsement. Contrary to that, within 29 days of reinstatement of the house, the House session has been ended. Clearly, the present government also plans to run the country through ordinances by escaping the House. In fact, the leaders are proving that the present constitution cannot be performed. Viewing the present political mess it becomes confirmed that Oli had taken the right decision.
