The 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress has become uncertain not only because of the COVID-19 but also the growing rift in the party. The party has been unable to hold the convention of the lower committees due to internal disputes. Even the distribution of active membership has been dragged into controversy with the rival faction led by Ram Chandra Paudel strongly opposing the unfair distribution of membership.

Moreover, the rival faction led by Paudel has threatened to launch a protest if party president Sher Bahadur Deuba did not correct his unilateral decision to from departments and appoint office bearers in it. Deuba called a meeting on Monday to resolve the dispute but in vain.

The rival faction has been exerting pressure on Deuba to hold the convention in the scheduled date of the second week of February in a fair manner. However, circumstances show that holding of the general convention before August 2021 looks impossible.
