The Kathmandu Valley has, of late, become the hotspots of COVID-19 infections with over 70 per cent of the total daily new cases detecting in it. Being the highly densely populated valley with three major cities in it, the new cases are increasing rapidly and showing worrisome trend when the major festival Dashain is approaching and market witnessing unmanageable crowd.
If we look at the data of the past three days, we get a bizarre picture of the valley in general and Kathmandu in particular. In average the Kathmandu Valley has been witnessing 1,100 to 1,500 new cases on a daily basis.
The MoHP on Tuesday confirmed 1,017 new cases of COVID-19 in the Kathmandu Valley while the new cases across the country were 1551.
Of the 1,017 new cases, 783 cases were detected in Kathmandu, 116 in Bhaktapur and 118 in Lalitpur.
Likewise of the 2,440 cases detected on Monday 1,531 cases were from the Kathmandu Valley itself.
Of the 2253 new cases of COVID-19 recorded across the nation on Sunday,1599 cases were detected in the Kathmandu Valley alone. This accounts for 70 per cent of the total cases detected across the country in a single day. Earlier, the valley registered highest ever single-day cases of coronavirus infection on Friday, with 1,638 cases.
Nepal’s coronavirus tally on Tuesday jumped to 90,814 with 563 deaths. Of them, 31,048 cases are in the Kathmandu Valley with 25,221 cases in Kathmandu district.
By now, 67,542 people have so far recovered from the infection. The recovery rate stands at 74.37 per cent, which is the only positive aspect in Nepal it the case of COVId-19.
Meanwhile, among 22,709 active cases, 9,118 patients are in institutional isolation and 13,591 are in home isolation. Similarly, 4,221 persons, mostly those who had returned from abroad, are staying in quarantine. According to the latest update, the total active cases stands at 25.01 per cent.
Of the active patients, 243 are admitted to the ICU and 40 are receiving treatment with the ventilator support.
The government earlier had said that it would impose lockdown if the active cases reach 25,000, which means the addition of 2500 active cases will meet the ceiling for another round of lockdown.
With increasing active and serious cases, all intensive care units of the hospitals have already been occupied, increasing the risk of collapse of the hospital system. The government in average conducting 11,000 PCR test a day and the number of infected are found to be higher when the tests are also high, which clearly indicates that many more infected people in Kathmandu are yet to be tested.
However, the government has not done much to control the COVID-19, the crowd in the market is a testimony to this. Many of the government offices, ward offices of the Kathmandu Valley have been shut down when staffers of those offices were found infected.
With increasing new cases, fatalities have also surged, mainly in Kathmandu. On Monday, Nepal recorded the highest single-day fatality at 19, and 12 of them from the Kathmandu Valley. Of the total deaths, Kathmandu Valley has 164 and Kathmandu district 112 fatalities.
