Vice-chairman of the ruling Nepal Communist Party Bamdev Gautam has finally managed to become a member of the National Assembly.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari last week nominated Gautam to the National Assembly member. The post had remained vacant for six months.
Before the president appointed Gautam in the vacant seat of the NA, the Council of Ministers had recommended his name for the vacant seat in the 59-member National Assembly.
However, Gautam had to sow the seed of dispute and suggest ways to resolve them to become an NA member.
He had lost the elections to the House of Representatives in 2017. He had rejected to become an NA member in March stating that he could not become PM by becoming an NA member. But in less than three years he was rejected by the people, he has become a parliamentarian. Earlier, party spokesperson Naryankaji Shrestha, who lost the election in also 2017, also reached the NA.
However, Gautam who wanted to become Deputy Chairman and Finance Minister is not likely to become minister due to controversial provisions in the constitution. According to an article, any leader defeated in the election of the House of Representatives could not be appointed minister until the term of the House expires. Moreover, it is unethical to become a lawmaker and minister in less than five years after suffering a defeat in elections. But for leaders in Nepal, ethics hardly matters.
