Completion of the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project is likely to delay further. It is not likely to commence even the test generation within the stipulated time.

The 456 MW project situated at Bigu Gaunpalika -1, Lamabagar of Dolakha district had planned to begin test generation of electricity by mid-October but since the testing could not be done in time, the production will be delayed.

Spokesperson of the project Dr Ganesh Neupane said that the test of headworks structures was halted due to the lockdown and the desander testing was started by mid-July this year. Currently, the project is using the water from the nearby river to test the desander and gates installed in it.

However, the testing of the dam was completed before lockdown.

Tamakoshi had planned to begin electricity generation from a unit by mid-October. “But workers from India left for their home during the lockdown and have not returned to the work yet,” said Dr Neupane.

The project that used to employ more than 900 workers before 2015 earthquake has only 400 workers at the site.

The work at the sub-station construction at Fulasi of Ramechhap district is also halted as the technicians couldn’t reach the site due to COVID-19.
