The dispute that has surfaced in the ruling Nepal Communist Party for that past six months seems to have been moving towards a solution with the acceptance of the report submitted by the six-member task force formed to suggest ways to resolve the dispute by the party chairmen duo, KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
A meeting of the party secretariat also decided to call the party’s Standing Committee meeting for Friday to discuss the report.
The party has also already decided to recommend Bamdev Gautam for his nomination in the vacant seat of the National Assembly following the spirit of the report. The task force was formed and it submitted its reports based on the six-point suggestions of Gautam. While agreeing to accept the report Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had to lose his favourite minister Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada from the Cabinet, who tendered his resignation last week after his re-nomination in the Upper House became impossible in the new set-up.
However, the task force report is not likely to be a panacea for the dispute. Senior leader Madhav Nepal has not been happy with the report as it did not provide him with any meaningful space in the party and government as it centred between only Oli and Dahal.
Although the report of the task force has helped end the imminent risk on the government Prime Minister Oli, it has provided ample ground to develop their own strategies to the NCP leaders. While Prime Minister Oli is reportedly trying to avoid Gautam’s nomination in the NA, Dahal is searching for ways to cut Oli’s wings further. Similarly, leader Nepal who has felt betrayal from Dahal is searching for ways to consolidate his position based on the same report.
If the three leaders fail to agree on power-sharing in the government and continue to develop their separate strategies to finish each other, the report is likely to be beneficial only for those who were in the task force, because PM Oli is likely to induct them in government as a prize for preparing the report in his favour.
