It could be a coincidence only that when Ishwor Pokhrel comes to the power, his samdhi (co-father) gets a political appointment.
The samdhi episode came into the surface when the government assigned professor Dr Upendra Koirala as the board director of the Rashtriya Banijya Bank with the plan of assigning him as the chairman of the Bank from the board meeting. However, the board meeting, which was aimed at assigning Koirala as the chairman, has been postponed for the time being.
In the past, when Pokhrel was the minister for trade, commerce and supplies, his samdhi (father-in-law of his influential son) became the executive chairman of the Nepal Oil Corporation, government undertaking known as a lucrative organ. There are hundreds of thousand party workers who have been suffering due to the lack of opportunity, but samdhijee Prof Dr Koirala is always being rewarded when the NCP, earlier UML, comes to the power!
Earlier, Koirala was assigned as the vice-chairperson of the then Higher Secondary Education Board. He had to quit the post following an investigation initiated by the Public Accounts Committee in the Parliament on the allegation of corruption.
Later, he was appointed the vice-chancellor of Mid-Western University. There also, he was alleged for being involved in corruption.
No surprise, there was hanky-panky on the medical supplies deal with the Omni, later, due to Pokhrel’s role to assign the Nepal Army for the medical supplies, the Army also fell into controversy.
Sources say that Pokhrel’s influential son was involved in the import of the medical supplies, that’s why the price of the medicines and medical equipment became many times costly than the market price.
In the Nepali context, there are strong relations between communist and corruption. In fact, they are like a hungry lion!
The fact is that there existed two types of laws in the country. One is for those helpless people, the other is for those who are in power!
Don’t ask the government for PCR tests
There is mounting pressure on the government from the medical experts to conduct PCR tests at mass level to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control.
The two most essential things to be done to bring under control the pandemic are that firstly, conducting PCR tests at a mass level along with intensifying contact tracing and either stopping migration of people or allowing people to move from one place to another along with the PCR negative report. Buth the government spokesman is saying that not to put pressure on the government for conducting PCR tests at mass as it is very expensive!
We saw daylight loot on procurement of the medical supplies, establishing the quarantine and isolation centres nationwide. If works were conducted through honesty and in a transparent manner, we could save billions of rupees, which could be used in PCR tests!
