By Our Reporter Many Internet service providers (ISPs) are in operation in Nepal. But only a few of them are providing reliable services. Most ISPs deceive their customers and apply various rules to exploit the poor customers. Mostly, they provide slow speed service against the promise of high speed. Some ISPs in Nepal reset the recharge on the day of buying the connection, every month even if the recharge was done 14-15 days before that day. This forces customers to abandon the monthly recharge option and switch to annual. They also deceive customers about the plan while providing package programme. When a customer commits for a package, he loses a handful of money, but what the customer gets in return is false hope. ISPs are companies which use their network to deliver internet services. For them, cable wire is not costly enough to charge them separately. But they tend to charge for cable separately to get more turnover per year. The average lifespan of optical wire is more than 10 years. But the link between cities breaks at least once a month. Some ISPs are quick to resolve the issue but others are quite slow to fix them. Dr. Rajiv Subba, former chief of the Directorate of Police Communication said, many customers could not get the service when they need it the most. He said the main problem is that IPS provide less-speed service than what they promise. “They study the pattern of Internet use and divert the speed to other areas assuming that the people of the particular area do not use Internet in particular time,” Subba said. He said the customers did not know this tactics of the IPS and the concerned regulating authorities were doing nothing to control such illegal activities.
