A china-returned Nepali student was found to have positive result following lab test, becoming the first patient of the endemic in Nepal
Health officials confirmed the positive test of coronavirus in Nepal on Friday.
The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) informed that the student, who recently returned home from Wuhan, China, was found to have coronavirus. The MoHP confirmed the first case of coronavirus in Nepal at a press conference organised at the ministry on Friday.
MoHP spokesperson Mahendra Prasad Shrestha informed that the specimens including throat swab from the Nepali student who returned from Wuhan, had been sent to World Health Organization (WHO) center in Hong Kong. The specimen was been found to have positive result following lab test.
Speaking at the press conference, Minister for Health and Population Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal said every possible measure would be taken to control the virus.
Director of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD), Dr. Bibek Kumar Lal, said that EDCD was working to control the virus. Accordingly, a health desk is operational at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) with eight health staffs deployed. Lately, patients of coronavirus have been found in China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, among other countries.
The Nepali man had returned from Wuhan on January 5. He had visited the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital (STIDH), Teku for respiratory problems and was discharged after five days.
Coronavirus that first spread from Wuhan has already killed 106 people in China and infected 4.515 individuals. Besides China, the disease was confirmed in 16 other countries, including Nepal.
