It has been seen generally that despite the course is same in Nepal for the private and the government institutions at university level on the case of Tribhuvan University (TU), the result of students in the private institution is better than the constituent campus of TU. It is also noticeable that only some teachers are new in the private institutions, that is to say, the same most of the teachers run from TU’s campuses to the affiliated private sector. Even the TU’s students have many faculties, who are qualified and they have already passed out the service commission of TU, for single subject in comparison to the private institutions but, again, the passing out result of the student is more in the affiliated private campuses. The question is very serious for the concerning parties, the government and for the image of TU. The columnist finds some sharp points which are to be taken into consideration by all.
Experience in the constituent campus
It is simple to acknowledge that the existing big change in the political system of Nepal has still much effect on the different sectors including the university education. The teacher and staffers have still no ‘fear’ of regularity and punctuality on duty. They can tell easily the name of leaders and non-academic events but they feel difficult to give names of academicians, scientists, researcher in their hardly daily talk of academic matter. This shows the lack of professionalism in them. Many non-permanent teaching staffers seem running in the private colleges after doing own duty in the constituent campus. Such teacher is always in hurry and his/her life is like a ‘hand’ of the watch, that is, always running. They would claim that their earning is less so they need to ‘run’ but a few of them would argue that s(he) will bring the ‘name’ in the coming competition of the TU’ service commission or any other in the private/government sector.
Students in constituent campuses sit in the class very less in the number whether it be the semester or annual system. They would like to pass the time in the field or at tea stall by gaffing together or backbiting other rather than involving themselves in learning process. Such students prefer those teachers who just delivers lecture in the class without class/home work or writing activities for semester programme too. It has been felt such students’ habit of ‘lecture-listening’ from remote past habit has left them cipher in writing so they like to ‘escape’ or searching alternate of rigorous learning. Surely, these students exert pressure and even threat to the personal life of the teachers for forceful ‘securing’ good marks in any internal evaluation. These students feel ‘fearless’ that who will ‘harm/touch’ them in the sense of valuation pattern.
Experience in the affiliated campus
The columnist has some experience of teaching before becoming a permanent staff in the TU and still interacts with private teaching resources to find out the responsible factors of becoming poor result of TU in comparison to the private colleges. There the teachers are always regular, punctual and ‘afraid’ of any complaint made by the students to the authority. Of course, the new teachers who are not involved in the TU or any other universities are like a ‘raw’ material and they deal the course with a great toil at night in the lack of orientation, seminar or refreshment of the course. Hence, a type of ‘fear’ is seen in them.
The students at the same time use to sit in the class and do the proper work. But except the humanities students, whose number is less in the private sector, generally these students quit the English class to take sunbath in the winter or gaff in the other season. They avoid the class saying that English is not their special in their engineering or medicine or any special advanced classes. They think speaking English is just knowing English subject, which is not correct. These students in average are full ‘confident’ that they will ‘secure’ good marks in the internal evaluation even by spoiling the exam or will surely ‘compete’ in the final exam even becoming absent in the internal exam. They are so ‘confident’ that they think they have paid fat amount as fees so it is the duty of the institution to make ‘eligible’ for final exam at any cost. Even the private institution feels ‘competition’ sharp to make more students pass in comparison to the other private and the constituent campuses and they do the duty of making students ‘eligible’!
Factors responsible and to be curbed
As per the politics of the country changes, some effects are definitely seen on the other sectors but the consciousness and the conscience of the teacher, staff and the students should help to realize what their duty is. The teaching and non-teaching staffers must have a feeling of threat of monitoring by the institution. At the same time, the stable government must regularize the service commission in TU and elsewhere to announce vacancies twice a year as per the regulation. The ministry of education must update the Plus Two level course then-and-there in support of teaching and learning campus level course with writing tendency. The government channel must have clear knowledge and controlling system effectively upon the monopoly acts of the private colleges to ‘pass’ more students even with doing foul activities. It will help the country to produce only ‘burden’ at the place of skilled human resources. The government must take it as a serious challenge.
In the same way, the sense in the student in the constituent campus should direct her/him as one goes for study at campus rather than ‘becoming sapling of the politics in the nursery’ for the political parties. Hence, there must be a vision in the government and the political parties that except the critical time in the country, the students must not be ‘used’ for their vested interest. For this surety, the stable government should bring welfare attractive programmes for universities only for the benefit of the people. If the political parties even give priority to the knowledgeable and expert students in research and writing activities, the flood of student in politics by forgetting study, will be controlled.
