Coinciding with the death anniversary of senior journalist late Gobinda Biyogi, founding chairman of the Editors’ Society of Nepal (ESON), journalism awards established in his memory have been distributed amidst a function organised at the Gobinda Biyogi Journalism Research Center in Surya Chour, Shivapuri height in Nuwakot on Saturday, 18 January.
This year’s Gobinda Biyogi Journalism Award was handed over to Gunraj Luintel, editor, Nagarik daily publishing from Kathmandu. Accordingly, Gobinda Biyogi Special Journalism Award was handed over to Prakash Giri, news editor in Sagarmatha Television. The two journalism awards consist of a purse worth 25001 rupees and 15001 rupees respectively established by Editors Society of Nepal in honour of its founding chairman.

Accordingly, the Society has honoured three senior journalists for their outstanding contribution in the field of Nepali journalism. Senior journalists Hiranyalal Shrestha, Madhab Kumar Rimal and late Jaya Prasad Dahal were honoured by the Society.
The award distribution programme was well attended by senior journalists, mostly editors, and political leaders such as Radhika Tamang, deputy speaker of the Bagmati Province Assembly; Hitbahadur Tamang, MP and former minister; Amrit Bohara, NCP leader; Arjunnarsingh KC, former minister and Jhalanath Khanal, former prime minister and senior leader in NCP. They extended congratulations to the awardees and appreciated the humble job done by the Society.
They lauded on press freedom and recalled late Biyogi’s contribution in the field of journalism and democracy.
They also expressed their commitment for their support for establishing the Gobinda Biyogi Journalism Research Center at Surya Chour in Shivapuri Height, about 13 kms far away from Basundhara Ringroad. They, while commending the Society’s work, asked the government to provide financial support for completing the construction of the building.
ESON general secretary Shyam Dotel briefed that without a single rupee support of the government, with the support of late Biyogi’s family and well-wishers, the structure construction of the building has been completed and internal construction works are yet to be completed. Dotel informed that the project cost is 100 million rupees.
Editors’ Society chairman Puru Rishal had chaired the function in which Khanal was the chief guest and KC was the special guest.
