After exercising for nearly two years the State Assembly of State 3 has finally christened as Bagmati with Hetauda its capital.
The State Assembly on Sunday endorsed the state’s name and capital with a resounding vote. The assembly voted to call the state as ‘Bagmati State’ with Hetauda as its permanent capital. Sanu Kumar Shresta, Speaker for the State Assembly, had declared that the proposed name and capital of State-3 were endorsed by a two-thirds majority of the State Assembly.
While 105 out of 108 members present in the voting had voted for Hetauda to be the permanent capital of the state, thereby passing the proposal with thumping majority.
Only three votes were cast in favour for Kavre to be the State capital.
Prem Bahadur Tamang, member of the State Assembly, didn’t participate in the voting.
“The State should be named according to caste-based identity. I will not cast vote for and against the proposed capitals,” he said.
Three members of State Assembly, Ramesh Poudel, Birajbhakta Shrestha and Shova Shakya who had voted against the proposed capital Hetauda, had voted for Bagmati to be the name of the State.
Earlier, the Assembly members were divided, with some advocating for Bhatapur and others Kavre as the State capital.
Nepal Communist Party Secretariat had to instruct the parliamentary party of the State Assembly to vote for Hetauda as capital with Bagmati its name. Still there was dispute on the capital. But finally, the State Assembly parliamentary party of NCP accepted the decree of the party.
Nepali Congress and Rastriya Prajatantra Party were in favour of Hetauda as its capital because they had fixed Hetauda as temporary capital of State 3 two and half years ago. Hetauda is home of town of RPP chair Kamal Thapa and Chief Minister Dormani Paudyal.
