Kathmandu, 27 December: Chairmen duo of the ruling Nepal Communist Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Khagda Oli are divided about the party’s candidate for the speaker’s position and the difference is likely to delay the election . Elections for the new speaker and deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, as planned earlier for today have become uncertain. Chairmen duo Oli and Dahal have failed to settle internal row over who to pick as candidate for speaker.
The internal rift is heightening as executive chair Prachand wants Oli to endorse his nomination for the candidate. He argues that former speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara also represented the former Maoist party, hence the same side should be given the position. Oli, on the other hand, is pushing for former speaker Subas Chandra Nembang’s reelection claiming Nembang is the only lawmaker who can tactfully face challenges of the parliamentary procedure in the coming days. Prachand is likely to pick Agni Sapkota if he is given a chance though he has not pronounced any name in the discussion so far.
Although a meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for toady is expected to announce Monday as the election date for speaker and deputy speaker, the meeting is likely to be postponed through a notice upon a request from the ruling party, a senior official at the Parliament Secretariat shared with People's Review.
