By Our Reporter A dispute has erupted in the recently concluded Standing Committee (SC) meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) over the issue of approving the agreement with Millennium Challenge Corporation (MMC) of US government. NCP leaders Bhim Rawal, Dev Gurung and others objected to the some provisions of MCC agreement and said it was a part of the Asia Pacific Strategy of America and the parliament should not endorse it. Many of dailies made news headlines of the dispute. However, the standing committee meeting that lasted for a week at the party office at Dhumbarahi authorized the party secretariat to reach a conclusion on the issue. The meeting endorsed the political document prepared by party chairmen KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal the party statute amendment proposal proposed by general secretary Bishnu Prasad Poudel. Although Prime Minister KP Oli, chairman Dahal and most of the former UML leaders were in favour of the MCC, leaders of the former Maoist Centre objected to the MCC due to their understanding that MCC was pushed forward to counter the One Belt One Road initiative of China. While NCP is divided, the main opposition, the Nepali Congress has pressed on its implementation. It has demanded early endorsement of MCC agreement. Meanwhile, Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) – Nepal has appealed the parliament for the timely ratification of the Millennium Challenge Compact as the delay in approval from the legislature might delay the commencement of the project set for 30 June 2020.
