The winter session of the parliament that began on Friday is expected to elect the new Speaker.
The lower House is expected to initiate the process of electing new Speaker from Friday.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumhamphe was said to have agreed to resign from her post so that ruling NCP could claim for the post of Speaker. Otherwise, the post will go to other party because constitutionally the Speaker and Deputy Speaker should be from separate political parties.
However, it is still uncertain as to who will be the next Speaker. The former Maoist camp has been demanding for the post as former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who has been doing his days at jail, was from the camp. Within the Maoist camp, Dev Gurung, Onsari Gharti and Agni Sapkota are willing to become the Speaker. But the UML camp as well as Pushpa Kamal Dahal want former Speaker Subas Nembang in the post.
But the post of Deputy Speaker is sure to go to the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal that recently inked an agreement with ruling NCP to cooperate each other during the forthcoming election to the National Assembly.
Now Sanghiya Samajwadi Party-Nepal quit the government, the RJP-N is likely not only to the post of Deputy Speaker but also of Deputy Prime Minister. The RJP leaders have already begun a race to become Deputy Speaker.
