Dispute in the Nepali Congress has spilled again with a faction led by Ram Chandra Paudel boycotting the Central Working Committee of the party.
The main cause of the dispute is the 14th general convention of the party, which party president Sher Bahadur Deuba wants to defer by a year to consolidate his power in the party, as his popularity in the party has dwindled after the humiliating defeat of the party in 2017 elections.
The leaders of the rival faction in the party, most of the party carders and well-wishers of the grand democratic party blamed Deuba for the NC defeat.
Had Deuba resigned on moral ground as suggested by the rival leaders after the humiliating defeat in the 2017 polls, his popularity would have increased, but he did not do that which culminated in the present dispute.
Deuba wants to win the post of party president, which is not possible if the general convention is held in March 2020 as per the party statute. He wants to extend his term by a year in the slim hope of winning the top party post again. But the rival faction, which has consolidated power in masses, is not ready to allow him to so until the party establishment makes public the general convention of the party.
When Deuba camp denied presenting the general convention schedule, Paudel group boycotted the meeting on Sunday, prompting Deuba to postpone the meeting.
It was also reported that Deuba, as suggested by Krishna Prasad Sitaula, has agreed to make public the schedule of the convention, which is for March 2021.
Another issue of dispute is the nomination of leadership in Tarun Dal and Nepal Student Union, the powerful sister organisations of the party. Deuba wants his loyal to lead the two organisations, but Paudel had challenged to form parallel organizations if Deuba chooses the leadership unilaterally. Simialrly, Deuba who did not bother to constitute 28 departments for four years, now wants to increase their number to 41 violating the party statute. This has also fueled the dispute.
It seems Deuba is not ready to step down no matter how poor the party will perform under his leadership. Many people in the party think that Deuba has become puppet of his wife Arzoo Rana, who contested the 2017 polls from Kailali and lost. Not only she lost, she also caused a huge damage to the party in western Terai due to her controversial decision to buy a house in Kailali. Of course, she was given ticket in place of popular NC leader Puskar Ojha, who had spent eight years in jail when Arzoo was enjoying her life in an affluent Rana family. Her unwanted candidacy discouraged people to vote to the NC candidates in the region.
