Lawmakers of the Nepal Congress (NC) obstructed the meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday, demanding an immediate decision to continue the operation of the hospitals opened in the name of late NC chairmen and former Prime Ministers Girija Prasad Koirala and Sushil Koirala.
The House meeting has been postponed till Tuesday after the NC obstructed even the second meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday.
Obstructing the parliament meeting, the main opposition party accused the government of intentionally dissolving the GP (Girija Prasad) Koirala National Respiratory Centre and Suhsil Koirala Prakhar Cancer Hospital established in Tanahun and Banke districts respectively.
Speaking at the Lower House, NC’s Deputy Parliamentary Party leader Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar threatened that his lawmakers would not allow the Parliament meeting to run smoothly until the government guaranteed the future of the two hospitals formed in the name of the two NC leaders.
Gachchhadar even challenge the government to change the name of the B P Highway into K P Highway.
“The government must immediately take a decision to continue the two hospitals in the name of the two NC leaders. The proceedings of the parliament will not be allowed until a decision to continue the two hospitals under the federal government is taken,” Gachchhadar said.
On last Thursday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had said that the government had no intention to dissolve the hospitals established in the name of political leaders.
Although Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara held discussion with the parties for the smooth operation of the parliament after its first meeting was obstructed, but in vain.
The meeting, attended by the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) leaders Ishwor Pokharel and Subas Chandra Nembang, and NC leader Gachchhadar along with others, could not reach any understanding due to the earlier stance of the NC leaders and the second meeting of the Lower House was also obstructed.
Due to the obstruction, deliberation on the Medical Education Bill was not possible in today’s meeting.
Similarly, the NC parliamentarians have also obstructed the meeting of National Assembly citing the similar reason.
The NC obstructed the House to foil the government plan to endorse the Medical Education Bill.
