By Our Reporter The poorly managed roads of the capital city finally turned into deathtraps on Friday when Binita Phuyel, a three grader of Nepaltar, died when she was swept away by a drain. Likewise, another girl,  Satya Sapkota, an eight-grader,  fell into a potholes and went missing for a while in Samakhusi. However, Sapkota was rescued alive latter. These two incidents of Friday, one of which was accidentally filmed and uploaded in facebook by an operator of a beauty parlour brought the true conditions of the road to limelight forcing Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to instruct the authorities to fix the conditions of the roads within a fortnight. When the video uploaded on the facebook reached masses, people came to know how irresponsible the authorities of the Road Departments were. When the roads turn into rivers and the commuters cannot see where the potholes, ditches and drains are and fell into them and meet accidents and even death, the authorities have not taken any measure to improve the condition of the roads. Not only in Samakhusi and Nepaltar, even elsewhere the roads are full of dangerous potholes and ditches.  One cannot deny repetition of Nepaltar incident in other areas during heavy rains. Though the condition of the road in the Kathmandu Valley has been in a poor condition for years, Prime Minister  Deuba instructed the authorities to improve the condition of the road only after the death of Phuyal. He called a meeting of the ministers of concerned departments, chief secretary, secretaries and department heads on Sunday and issued his decree. “Fix all the potholes and solve the problem of sewerage leakage,” the PM told the authorities. Earlier, former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had also issued similar instruction, which only fell into the deaf ears. Had Dahal’s instruction been followed, the poor girl would not have met untimely death. “This government is formed for the people and we should solve the problems faced by people at any cost,” the PM said. “The roads of the city look like ponds, the school children fall into the drain while walking, due to the potholes, Kathamndu does not look like a metropolis,” he added. “What are you doing, fix all the potholes immediately, if you need budget, I will make that available.” He further instructed to erect all fallen electricity poles. He wished there would be no pothole in the valley in the next 15 days. “Report me in 15 days,” the PM said. He also told the NEA, NTC and the Road Department to work in close coordination. Deputy Prime Minister and Local Development Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, Urban Development Minister Prabhu Sah, Chief Secretary Rajendra Kishor Kshetri and others were present in the meeting.
