Everyone knows that the government decided to postpone the local polls of Province 2 due to pressure from the RJP as the party shut down the election offices set up in the province and took control of the employees mobilsed in the province to hold the local polls. But still the RJP is opposing the postponement of the poll stating that the election was postponed without consulting them.
Then what the RJP wants? It did announce protest programmes to disturb the second phase polls demanding that the election date must be deferred. And when the government did as per their demands, they are telling that they will not participate in the poll even on September 8!
This double standard of the RJP is not understandable. But this is almost sure to increase their unpopularity in the Terai. It was also evident from the filing of candidacies by the RJP carders and leaders in Kapilvastu and Rupandehi districts.
Although they have demanded amendment to the constitution, the overwhelming participation of people in the local polls is likely to make their demands irrelevant and even impossible.
Meanwhile, the postponement of the local poll in Province 2 has made the locals unhappy. Both the candidates and the voters have expressed ire against the government decision to postpone the poll.
When the people in other provinces will have their representatives to listen to their woes and spearhead the development activities, the people in Province 2 will not have them. Even holding polls on September 8 will be challenging for two reasons—monsoon and the festival as Dashain begins from September 10. Hence, the postponement of the poll is likely to be meaningless.
