The cabinet meeting that used to take twice a week--on Monday and Thursday has not held since March 16 apparently due to the protocol row between Deputy Prime Minister Bimalendra Nidhi and Kamal Thapa.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been unable to decide which of the DPM should be designated as the ‘second man’ of his cabinet. Before Thapa was inducted, Nidhi was the second man and he acted as acting PM when Dahal went to India. But last month Dahal flew China without designating any of them as acting PM.
Now he is unable to hold the regular cabinet meeting due to the protocol row. As a result, the government has not appointed IGP of Nepal police even when the country is preparing to hold the local polls.
It is reported that PM Dahalhad assured Thapa to give him the seniority status among the three DPMs while inducting him in the cabinet. Now both Nidhi and Thapa have threatened to quit the government if they were denied the senior status in the cabinet.
The seniority row between the two DPMs was exposed during the arrival of Prime Minister Dahal from China last week.
