U.S. Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz and Peace Corps Nepal Country Director Nelson Chase hosted a celebration on March 23, to commemorate the 55th anniversary of Peace Corps’ arrival in Nepal.  The event celebrated the work and contributions of over 3,750 American volunteers who lived, worked and served in communities throughout Nepal since 1962. Attendees included officials from the Ministries of Agricultural Development and Health, Nepalis whose lives were improved by the work of Peace Corps Volunteers and many current and former Volunteers. The celebration included a photo exhibition of Peace Corps Volunteers’ work throughout Nepal over the past 55 years, with a focus on the activities and lives of Volunteers in the early years of 1962 to 1970.  Fifty-four Peace Corps Volunteers currently serve in Nepal, supporting food security in rural communities in eight districts of the Western and Mid-Western Development Regions. Peace Corps provides a two-year service opportunity for motivated American volunteers to immerse themselves in a community abroad to work side by side with local leaders to address development challenges.  Currently operating in over 60 countries, Peace Corps aims to promote world peace and friendship by helping people of interested countries to address development needs, helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served, and helping to promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
