image005The Government of Japan has decided to extend financial assistance of US Dollars 83,270, to Samaj Sewa Samuha under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme of the Government of Japan in Japan’s Fiscal Year 2016. Samaj Sewa Samuha, a Nepali NGO in Kavrepalanchok district, will implement the Project for the Construction of a Care Home for Mentally Disabled Children in Kavrepalanchok District, a press release by Japanese embassy said. This grant assistance will be used to implement the project in Kharelthok VDC in Kavrepalanchok district and aim to assist mentally challenged children who need special care at a Care Home, said the statement. Nepali society still views disability as a penance to the sins committed in previous births. According to the national census, about 2% of the total populations in Nepal are people with disabilities of one form or another and they live in very challenging conditions due to limited access to social and economic activities. Parents and supporters of mentally challenged children initiated and built a rehabilitation center in Kharelthok VDC in 2006 in order to provide a healthy and educational environment to those children. Currently, there are 20 mentally disabled children. However, the space is limited and its building is vulnerable to any disasters which may occur in the future.
