By Our Reporter In a bid to appease the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front, the government has decided to increase the number of local units to 744 from 719 approved by the Local Level Restructuring Commission (LLRC). A Cabinet meeting held at Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s residence in Baluwatar late on Sunday decided to add 25 local units—19 in Province-2, three in Western Tarai, two in Kathmandu and one in Nuwakot. The addition was made as per the recommendation made by a three-member taskforce led by Local Development Minister Hit Raj Pande. LLRC earlier in August had recommended creation of 565 local units which was strongly objected by Nepali Congress. The government decision to increase the local units just two months before the local polls was made only to please the Madhes-based parties. Addition of the local bodies will increase the administrative cost of the government. Moreover, the Madhes-based parties are likely to continue to protest against the LLRC report including the addition of local units by the government. It is also evident from the resignation tendered by LLRC member Sunil Ranjan Singh immeditaly after the government decided to increase the number of local units. The government that had earlier hold on the report submitted by the LLRC led by Balananda Poudel was compelled to add new units in the recommendation as the Election Commission sought the LLRC report to make preparations to hold the local polls on May 14.
