The present coalition government of Nepali Congress and the Maoist Centre has once again proved that they are little bothered about the plights of the people. They are interested more to take revenge against the CPN-UML, the main opposition party that has been trying to foil their design to weaken Nepal. It was evident from the sacking of Chief Executive Officer of the National Reconstruction Authority Sushil Gyawali.
Gyawali was dismissed from the post after seeking two clarifications from him in two weeks. The government has appointed Dr Govinda Pokharel in the place of Gyawali.
Interestingly, Pokharel was appointed to the same post by the Sushil Koirala-led government, but his appointment was not endorsed due to objection from the CPN-UML. Later the KP Oli-led government appointed Gyawali CEO of NRA almost a year after the devastating earthquake of April 2015. Pokharel is known as NC loyal while Gyawali was a former UML cadre.
Sacking of Gyawali is likely to further delay the reconstruction works which were gradually taking a pace in recent months. New CEO Pokharel will need time to assess the progress being made during Gyawali’s tenure. He may replace the staff of the NRA secretary with those loyal to him. He also needs time to do this. This is sure to affect the ongoing reconstruction works. Indeed, the political parties should be blamed for the delay in giving pace to the reconstruction of the villages and monuments damaged by the earthquake.
In the beginning they quarreled over the appointment of the CEO as they wanted their man to lead the powerful authority. Now in the middle, they sacked the CEO appointed by the previous government led by Oli. The sacking and appointment of three CEOs in 15 months clearly showed the political parties do not want to give momentum to reconstruction works, but want to have their men in the NRA.
