Nepali artists showing their work at international art exhibition, Bangladesh

Four Nepali artists are exhibiting their work in an international art exhibition, hosted by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, in Dhaka. The Academy has been hosting the event every year, since past 34 years. The 17th iteration of the exhibit that takes place once in two years, which started on December 1, features a total of 343 artists from 54 different countries. Representing Nepal at the event are artists Rabindra Shrestha, Jupiter Pradhan, Karma Chhetu Gurung, and Laxman Shrestha. One of the selected Nepali artists, Karma Chhetu Gurung, says, “If we want to leave mark on the world and establish our identity, all we have to do is be honest with ourselves and our work.” Gurung’s artworks on display at the event revolve around the labours who take pride in what they do. While Jupiter Pradhan’s works revolve around the theme ‘home away from home’, Laxman Shrestha has tapped into the trembles of earthquake through animated art. Until last iteration, the artists were selected by the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, however, this time around the selections were made via open call for applications. Rabindra Shrestha, another selected Nepali artist, says, “It is a matter of pride for us that participants from other countries are influenced by Nepali artists. Platforms like this one can be instrumental in globalising Nepali arts.” The exhibit will run until December 31.
