By Our Reporter Bangladesh has expressed its interest in developing big hydro projects in Nepal. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed expressed her interest in investing in hydro projects of Nepal during a meeting with Energy Minister Janardhan Sharma in Dhaka recently. During Minister Sharma’s Dhaka sojourn, the two sides formally discussed the issue relating to Bangladeshi investment in Nepal power project in a meeting in which Prime Minister Wazed was also present. Sources said Bangladesh wants to invest one million US dollars in a hydro project to be built in Nepal. 6267-004-d59711caAccording to Minister Sharma as quoted by the media here, Bangladesh had forwarded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to the Nepal government a year and a half ago which was not responded. Now Minister Sharma is mulling over signing a new MOU with Bangladesh regarding the development of  joint-ventured  hydro projects in Nepal. Bangladesh’s energy minister is also invited to Nepal to sign the MOU. As Bangladesh has a huge demand of electricity and Nepal possesses a huge potential to generate hydroelectricity.  Nepal can benefit by exporting power to Bangladesh. But the vital question is how power generated in Nepal can be transmitted to Bangladesh as India lies between Nepal and Bangladesh and the former may not allow her land to carry power. India itself needs power. Moreover, India may not allow Nepal to export power to any third country. Bangladesh had also shown its interest to invest in hydroelectricity in Nepal during the 9th South Asian Economic Summit that it hosted in October. On the sidelines of the event, Commerce Minister Romi Gauchan Thakali and his Bangladeshi counterpart Tofail Ahmed signed an agreement to build two hydroelectric plants capable of generating over 1,600 megawatts of electricity in Nepal. The proposed projects are 1,110 MW Sunkoshi II and 536 MW Sunkoshi III located at Sunkoshi River in central Nepal. Both the countries have agreed to develop the projects under the BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) initiative which was signed by four countries to facilitate the regional trade and business.
